A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to their client before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
The birth of your baby is an experience you will never forget. You will remember it on regular basis, every time you see a baby for the rest of your life. Even patients with dementia have been shown to forget almost everything else about their lives, except for the births of their babies. What do you want that memory to look like? What do you want that memory to feel like? Whatever your answers are to those questions, a doula can help you achieve that. If you want the best possible chance of a healthy baby and healthy mom - a doula can help you. If you want a natural birth with minimal to no interventions or drugs - a doula can help you. If you want to go with the flow - a doula can help you. Whatever your goal is, I’m on your team, without judgement, full of support.
I can support any type of human birth! This includes births that take place in the hospital, the birth center, at home, in nature, etc. - as long as a care provider (OB or midwife) is also present. Medicated or unmedicated, surgical or vaginal - whatever you choose, my job is to support you.
Yes! Most of the clients I see are actually experienced parents. These parents have been through birth before and know, first hand, how valuable and needed the extra support is for labor and delivery. I, personally, did not know to hire a doula for my 1st or 2nd babies, but I did hire doulas for both my 3rd and 4th deliveries.
Yes! Doulas are still beneficial in both of those scenarios. With epidural medication, I am able to support before, during, and after. There are several position changes I am able to facilitate in order to help your baby navigate your pelvis and help your labor progress more easily. During cesarean births, only one support person is typically allowed with you during the surgery. I would wait in pre-op or recovery during the procedure, but I would be able to help you prepare (you still have choices in a cesarean birth!), and be there immediately before and after to help with recovery, breast feeding, advocating for your wishes, as well as supporting dad and baby through everything.
You can hire a doula at anytime during your pregnancy, all the way up until you are in active labor. The ideal time frame would be before 37 weeks of pregnancy to ensure we have time to get to know each other and prepare together. Most families hire their doula during the 2nd trimester. The sooner you choose your care team, the sooner you’re able to get much needed support!
Yes. While UMC does offer free in-house doulas, research shows that the primary benefits of doulas are only effective when the doula is not part of hospital staff and is not in your social circle. A private doula only works for you and has your interest at heart.
In nearly all ancient cultures, laboring moms have been supported by two people. Early historic drawings and photographs show that labor support is most effective when there is a group of three - the mom and two supporters. This is still the case today. My goal, when the clients are interested, is to teach and work with dad in as many ways as possible. I know that I’ve done my job well when a dad is able to step in and allow me to step back, giving the loving couple privacy and space to experience their baby’s birth together.
In most cases, dads want to be involved but they just don’t know how. A doula is a great person to help them through that. Dads need support too!
A doula is a non-medical support person who focuses on caring for you emotionally and physically, and helps you to be informed and empowered. While they often have similar approaches, a midwife differs from a doula in a very large way. A midwife is a *medical* professional, meaning that the primary focus of their care is on the health and safety of you and your baby. Both doulas and midwives work with you prenatally, support you throughout the birth and follow up with you postpartum. Specifically at a birth, doulas are often found doing hip squeezes, refilling your water bottle, providing guidance and reassurance (to you and your partner), and repeating affirmations that empower you. At a birth, midwives may be found doing similar things to a doula, but their top priorities include: ensuring that you and baby's vital signs are stable, assessing you and your baby, completing cervical exams when needed, administering medication if necessary, and catching the baby you are birthing.
Doulas and midwives go together like peanut butter and jelly!
No. I cannot check blood pressure, assess baby’s heartbeat, perform cervical checks, prescribe medication, or handle any other medical related task. I am well versed in both medical and natural methods, so I am able to discuss and explain all of your options to help you work with your care provider and make the most informed, evidence-based decision for you and your baby.
I am trained through both the Indie Birth Doula Course and DONA International. The Indie Birth Doula Course is an extensive 4 month educational program, while DONA International is the gold standard for doula certification. Doing both is not required, but it is important to have a wealth of knowledge available to help my clients. I am also working on my certifications with Spinning Babies, and the BodyReadyMethod.
I have options ranging from $100-$950. I also am able to provide discounted or free services to families in need. If you would like to help provide services to a family in need, or apply for assistance, please reach out to me at (806) 500-9811 or magnoliabirthLBK@gmail.com.
